Last year's events - a review of the trips to Arran
words & photos Sue Murdoch ![]() Arran – May 2010
At the end of May a large group travelled up to Arran. Known
as Scotland in miniature due to its varied scenery it is a small island located in the Mull of Kintyre easily reached by ferry.
The group stayed in bed and breakfast accommodation in the village of Lamlash
overlooking the bay and Holy Isle. Lamlash Bay has been designated a ‘No Take Zone’ where fisherman
are not allowed to fish or take anything from the sea- this has led to a great variety of life in the bay. For
those that managed to get up early and walk along the shoreline they were rewarded with magical sightings of otters fishing.
Elsewhere Spring flowers filled the grass verges around the island and there was a host of bird life to be seen.
There were many things to photograph on the island from the boulders at Corrie, Holy Isle to the waterfalls up Glen Rosa - club members made the most of the good weather. Some even found time to cycle round the island! A good time was had by all. ![]()

![]() Arran –
October 2010
Having visited Arran in
May, many of the group were keen to see the island in a different season. This time the group went self-catering
– one group took over the top floor and annex of a wonderful old house standing on the hill looking out over Lamlash
Bay, whilst some were in a small house along the shore road. The weather was very different from the earlier trip – the first glimpse of Goatfell was
of a snowy capped peak through the mist! Not quite a Munro, standing at only 2866 feet, it is never the
less an impressive view if you climb to the top. Unfortunately, we were all too busy to tackle the ascent
- either taking photographs (whatever the weather!) or was it dancing around the Machrie Standing Stones – at least
that’s our excuse. Maybe next time. Although an otter was spotted the first morning it was to
be our only sighting. Red deer, seals and red squirrels were seen; however, none of them came quite close
enough to the cameras for us to grab those award winning photographs.
